The Kobayashi surprised everyone in his battle with Button

Kobayashi surprised everyone in his battle with Button

Kobayashi has been confirmed at Sauber for 2010.

Kamui Kobayashi only has two F1 GPs under his belt – courtesy of Glock’s absence due to injury after qualifying at the Japanese Grand Prix.

However, he immediately began making waves first by defending heavily against Button at Brazil and crashing with Nakajima in a controversial move. At his last F1 race he also overtook the champion-in-waiting Button.

His refusal to be intimated by the top guys has already resulted in Kamui winning plenty of fans although we have yet to see how he fairs over an entire season.

Kobayashi instantly seemed to settle into the Formula1 cars which was a surprise; in the Euro Series of Formula 3 he was eight overall, a big achievement for a rookie but he suffered in GP2 and only managed 16th overall. But Sauber has a history of spotting up and coming talent – Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen for example.

Kobayashi will have to earn his place in F1. Ferrari-backed Bianchi could be trained up by Sauber as the team will be using their engines and so potentially have Kaumi’s seat in 2011.

The second Sauber seat is likely to go to an experienced driver. If Schumacher does return and take the Mercedes cockpit then Nick Heidfeld, who was linked there, will almost certainly return to the Sauber squad.
