Mercedes confirmed today that Petronas will become it’s title sponsor. The Malaysian oil company has sponsored the Sauber team since 1996, and stayed on with BMW when they bought Peter Sauber’s squad.

The move means that the German team will be known as Mercedes GP Petronas Formula One Team.

The new provisional livery created by the team reveals more sponsors than the press-release leads us to believe: MIG and Graham, previous Brawn GP backers, are continuing onboard with Mercedes. Aabar, a shareholder of the Daimler group, and Syntium, a brand of Petronas, are also displayed in the car’s colour scheme.

The livery pictured above may be provisional, but that does not mean the the team will have to merge Petronas’ turquoise with the silver background – BMW have always been white and blue during it’s time in Formula 1.

The move is attractive for the German car maker, which seems to be seeking new horizons. Speaking to the media, Norbert Haug said:

Mercedes-Benz and Petronas will work together both on and off the track. Petronas’ home base in Kuala Lumpur is in a fast-growing region for the automotive industry, which makes this new partnership even more valuable.

The definitive Mercedes livery will be unveiled at the first February testing season, in Valencia.
