Preview of Ferrari’s 2010 challenger

Ferrari 281 drawing

Today’s edition of La Gazetta dello Sport came with a full page dedicated to Ferrari and it’s 2010 car – the 281. With drawings by Formula1.com official illustrator, Giorgio Piola, it gives a insight on how the Maranello-based team dealed with the rule changes for this season.

As predicted at the time of the German Grand Prix last season, the car will be inspired (or copied, depending on how you see it) on Adrian Newey’s RB5, indicating that the Red Bull car had indeed the best aerodynamic package. The nose will be V-shaped just like the RB5, and the camera mountings will too be placed almost at the end of the nose.

The biggest change however, is the size of the fuel tank, which is said to be the double of the 2009 tanks. It is estimated that the cars will be more 185 kilos heavier this year, something that will have a impact on brake wear, a problem that will be even more critical in tracks like Monaco, Hungaroring and Singapore. The larger fuel tank means that the wheelbase will 15 centimeters longer, and the oil tank have been moved from the front to the back of the engine.

However, Piola’s drawing shows little to none developement in critical areas such as front and rear wings, which are almost identical to the ones installed on the F60. This lead me to think that this drawing is not at all accurate – it’s unlikely that Ferrari would keep the same front and rear wing designs when the whole of the car as changed, and things like narrower front tyres, banning on wheel rims and longer wheelbase will all have and impact on how the car will behave aerodynamically. A Formula 1 car is all about the package – you can’t radically change something while leaving other area of the car untouched. But it is still a nice preview of the car though…
