Does Button stand a chance against Hamilton?

Will Hamilton have a firm grasp on Button in the 2010 season?

Will Hamilton have a firm grasp on Button in the 2010 season?

The situation at Mclaren has been levelled out slightly by that Hamilton will be getting a new race engineer. But Button still has to fit in with the whole team and adapt pretty quickly which is a big ask.

I think Hamilton is the best for outright pace but the new rules changes things. Button has the smoother driving style which means he should preserve his tyres better, Hamilton is far more aggressive and could struggle when the car has a full tank sloshing about.

However, if the car changes throughout the race and it doesn’t suit Button then he could find problems. He’s often criticised of needing a perfect car to perform well so if he can’t cope there will be nowhere to hide from the British press who will be desperate to see who their hero is in the all Brit line-up.

Mclaren will also be a team closely scrutinised for their treatment of their drivers. They don’t have the best record when it comes to managing champions and now they have two to deal with.

It takes two to tango and Alonso wasn’t the only one at fault in 2007. It’s a different context as Jenson will be arriving at Woking knowing he will have to fight and won’t be expecting a number one status like Alonso did. However, Heikki Kovalainen was also reported as claiming that Mclaren weren’t always equal. That’s two drivers who have left under somewhat of a cloud after squaring up against Lewis and Button will be well aware of that. In fact when he first arrived at the Mclaren base he immediately asked if it was Hamilton’s team.

Hamilton has had this team built around him since he entered and has strong bonds there. When fighting for the championship it will be a huge strength that he will have that trust and understanding with those around him-Button won’t have that luxury.

Kovalainen had his head destroyed by Lewis constantly outperforming him and Button should be keen to have a grasp on the young gun fairly quickly. Button was also noted for not having the strongest of mentalities so he will have to take a deep breath and just get the job done.

At the end of the day Hamilton’s greater natural talent should see him lead the Mclaren fight but Button is a much wiser head. Button won’t be prone to the errors Hamilton sometimes commits-the most damaging in 2009 were crashing out of Monaco qualifying and crashing into the barrier at Monza when in a podium position-which should see Button rack up the points. Additionally, Button should be happy with the new rules and it may take a bit more time for Lewis to get to grips. I think Button will cope and there won’t be any tantrums (maybe the odd pychological game) but Hamilton will eventually assert his authority over the 2009 world champion.

If it was 2009 he’d get absolutely destroyed by Hamilton. I think Hamilton has more racing talent in his little finger than Button has in his entire body.

2010 will be different though as Button is one of the best at saving his tyres so I think he’ll be better on heavy fuel so I think they could be evenly matched in 2010.

I don’t think the team will favour any driver this year, I think they’ll want them both to do well and as Button is British.

” I think Hamilton has more racing talent in his little finger than Button has in his entire body” Not a fan then Tommy? :P I think that’s exactly it though the context of this year will aid him a lot regarding the rule changes. Much like he had all the right circumstances coming together in 09 (but then so does every champion in their winning year).
Focusing solely on Mclaren they will almost certainly give equal treatment but watch how they develop the car; their styles aren’t worlds apart like Alonso’s and Hamilton’s but Button prefers a stable car so there may be some compromise there.

No, I think Hamilton is one of the most, if not the most, naturally gifted F1

drivers on the grid. He was born to drive in F1.

I don’t think Button is that good, he can only do well if he has the best car. He wasn’t considered even a top 10 driver in 2007/2008.

Agree about Hamilton and Button. He certainly came along way from the last in the standings out of the drivers who scored points to the championship winner.

Button probably have done the biggest mistake in his life, don’t know whether Mercedes left him or he left that team but if it’s the later then I don’t think he will come on top.

I am betting on Hamilton taking the fight to Alonso for the WC.
    GAME ON

Hamilton will beat button comfortably i think.had Hamilton.Massa or Kimi been in the brawn they would have won the title a couple of races earlier.he just lacks the killer instict plus Lewis is the best driver on the grid at the moment.Button has made a huge mistake
