Early career

Jaime Alguersuari started his formula racing career in 2005. The next year he won the Italian Formula Renault Winter Series before finishing runner up in the main competition the next year.

Formula Three

Alguersuari moved to the British Formula Three championship for 2008, driving for the Carlin Motorsport team. The overall championship went down to the final meeting at Donington Park with Alguersuari and his teammates Oliver Turvey and Brendon Hartley and T-Sport’s Sergio Pérez all with a chance of winning. However it was Alguersuari who took a double win at Donington to take the title.

Formula Renault 3.5 & Formula 1

Alguersuari moved to the Formula Renault 3.5 Championship for 2009, continuing with the Carlin team. However mid-season, he took over the reserve driver role at F1 teams Red Bull and Toro Rosso from his former Formula Three teammate Brendon Hartley.

Less than two weeks later, Sebastien Bourdais was sacked from his drive at Scuderia Toro Rosso and Alguersuari stepped in to replace him, making his F1 debut at the Hungarian Grand Prix – he became the youngest driver ever to compete in F1, and the only driver in F1 ever to be born in the 90s. He finished his first Grand Prix in 15th. He competed in the last 7 races of the 2009 F1 season, but he only completed 3, with 14th being his highest finishing position.

Despite having driven in F1 for the latter half of the 2009 season, he continued to race in Formula Renault 3.5 at the same time, and a week after his F1 debut he drove in Formula Renault 3.5 in Portugal, where he took his first pole and followed it up with his first win. Alguersuari finished the championship in 6th place.

Alguersuari will continue at Toro Rosso for the 2010 season.
