Formula Renault

After achieving 5th place in the karting world championship, Formula A di Grassi decided to switch to cars.

The next level was Formula Renault (the Brazilian series) in 2002. In his first year di Grassi would finish runner up showing plenty of potential.

Formula Three

This catagory was next on the list and di Grassi signed for Avallone Motorsport in 2003 for the Formula Three Sudamericana championship.
Once again he would finish runner up in a championship although his campaign did suffer when the Brazilian had to miss the last six races due to injury after a heavy crash at Curtiba.

An agreement was reached with Prena Powerteam to allow di Grassi to make four starts in the F3 Euroseries. His best result would be a solid fourth place.
This would encourage the Brazilian to switch to Europe for the following year and would drive for Hitech Racing in the British F3 Championship. He could only manage eigth overall.

In 2005, di Grassi would pilot the cockpit of Manor Motorsport in the F3 Euroseies where he would wind up third at the end of the year.

Preparing for F1

Di Grassi would progress to GP2, a series genuinely accepted as the main route to F1. With Team Durango he could only grab eight points (and placing 17th in the championsip) but the next year he was able to secure a better drive with ART Grand Prix.

He would clinch his first win at Turkey and due to his consistent point scoring he would take the lead in the championship. However, he couldn’t hold Glock back and would go on to lose the title.

In 2008 he would return to GP2 after securing a test driver role with the Renault F1 team but this time he would be driving for Campos Racing from the fourth round of the championship. If he had competed from the beginning, there may have been a successful charge for the title but 3rd was all that could be taken.

The 3rd place would be repeated in 2009 with Racing Engineering.

Formula 1

Di Grassi enjoyed a comfortable relationship with Renault as a test driver. This position came about after testing for Honda at the end of 2008, where he was just 0.5 seconds off Button’s pace.

He has signed a contract to race for new F1 team Virgin in 2010 alongside former GP2 rival Timo Glock.
