Quick Nick overshadowed once again.

Heidfeld: where are you going next year?

Heidfeld: where are you going next year?

While most of the motorsport world celebrates the return of Schumacher, Nick Heidfeld has just lost the chance to pilot probably the best car of his career.

Heidfeld was in discussions with Mercedes for a drive next year but all of their seats have gone. Schumacher is already talking about targeting the 2010 title with the German outfit and it seems Heidfeld has lost any chance of ever claiming a win.

He does have options though; he could return to Sauber which he knows will be a comfortable fit. Sauber has just taken on new talent Kobayashi so an experienced head alongside him would receive a warm welcome. However, Sauber may have been in the game a while but they were granted entry late so although they should be ahead of the new teams they are still expected to be midfield at best.

Another choice is to partner his former teammate Robert Kubica at Renault. Renault will need a solid driver particularly going through the transition of the Genii deal. Additionally, Kubica is only thought to have a one-year contract as he goes in hunt of a top team so Nick could be a good long term solution. But others such as Petrov have been linked to that seat so there may be a fight for that drive.

It seems cruel that a driver who has beaten the much-hyped Kubica twice has been left out in the dark while the Pole gets a fairly competitive drive. Heidfeld has delievered solid results and when the BMW was weak this year drove a great race to end up on the podium at Malaysia.

Even when Kubica was fighting for the title in 2008 Nick was able to pull out some cracking moves when needed…

Perhaps it is the quiet image that makes Nick a forgettable character but it seems wrong to me that someone who can beat Kubica (who is already labelled a future champion) can end up in a drive just to make up the numbers.

kubica is overrated,Nick is very consistent but has yet to win a race and is not quite on the level of the top drivers but I do think he deserved a chance at Mercedes GP

I don’t think Kubica is overrated – I think Heidfeld is overrated by the fans. It is correct to say that he beaten his team mates, but three of them were rookies, and while they became promising drivers (Kubica), race winners (Massa) and world champions (Raikkonen), Heidfeld stayed the same…

When he had his greatest opportunity ever (2008) he was dominated by Kubica. He will turn 33 next may and I can’t picture him in any top team in the next years. It’s likely that his win will never come.

    Thanks for the comment :)
Nick isn’t getting any younger either so it’ll be incredibly difficult for him ever to get his first win now it seems.

What I think is that Sauber just might be very fast next year. BMW Sauber was quite fast in the last races (Spa, Suzuka, Interlagos, Abu Dhabi). I hope they keep the pace and I think they might be the 5th fastest team on the grid. With Kobayashi and hopefully Heidfeld they have a solid line up.

Shame about Nick though. He should get a chance, he scored 219 points without a race win, which is by far the most, and he finished the race 2nd for 8 times. Let’s hope his talent doesn’t get wasted.

First of all I would like to offer my congratulations to Steph! I feel so happy for you now :) You have taken the correct decision to set up your own blog & I see that Mr Philosopher is also helping you out :) congrats to him too.

May this blog reach great heights & emulate F1F, its one of my wishes for x’mas.
Steph, we need to have as may people from F1F to visit this blog. Again I am not asking you to propagandize on F1F, but people always enjoy reading something unique, something that makes them see things in a different perspective & I know that you are very much capable to tapping into people’s psychic.

I would be glad to offer any little help I can from my side. Again best wishes to Steph & all the members of this “unique” blog.

    Happy boxing day :)

Great article Steph, I hope Quick Nick now goes to Sauber. I will definately be a big fan of Sauber if they have Kobayashi and Heidfeld next year :D
